Chronic Illness and Disability

Attending a medical school for my master's degree (PCOM) has provided me with unique tools when it comes to working with clients that have been diagnosed with a chronic medical condition or a disability as well as when they have a loved one that is suffering from medical concerns. I have been educated in treating the whole person via the bio, psycho, social model and integrate this into my practice regularly. The way we think and feel effects our physical health and vice versa. Being given a frighting diagnosis often leads to things like depression and anxiety, even in those that never experienced these feelings before.

Below are some examples of how I can help:

  1. Behavioral Medicine: I apply psychological theories and methods to understand how behaviors such as diet, exercise, smoking, and substance use affect health outcomes.

  2. Chronic Illness Management: I assist individuals coping with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer. I help patients manage stress, adhere to treatment regimens, and make lifestyle changes that can improve their quality of life.

  3. Stress Management: I specialize in stress reduction techniques and coping mechanisms to help individuals manage stress effectively. Chronic stress can contribute to various health problems, so teaching stress management skills is a significant part of my role.

  4. Patient Education: I assist clients in learning more about their conditions and empower them to take an active role in their healthcare. This can include teaching relaxation techniques, providing information on healthy living practices, and encouraging compliance with medical treatments.

  5. Pain Management: I can help individuals manage and cope with chronic pain through psychological interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness techniques. This can complement medical treatments and improve overall pain management outcomes.

  6. Consultation: If requested, I am able to collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, and nutritionists, to provide comprehensive care to clients that falls in line with their overall treatment plan.
